James goes to a lot of meetings as a representative of the HIV+ community on the Executive Committee; Steering Committee; Kaposi’s Sarcoma Working Group; Non-AIDS Defining Cancer (NADC) Working Group; NADC’s Skin and Conjunctiva Task Force; NADC’s Head and Neck Cancers Focus Group; NADC’s Lung, Head, and Neck Task Force; Outreach, Education, Recruitment, and Retention Committee; Patient Navigator Committee; Behavioral Research Working Group, and International Activities Committee.​ 

Before joining the AMC, James practiced and taught psychiatry as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hawaii and in San Francisco.
