Lisa Flowers, M.D.

Dr. Flowers is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist and Professor in the Department of OB/GYN at Emory University. The focus of her independent program of research centers on biomarkers associated with lower anogenital tract disease, especially as it relates to HPV-related cervical and anal dysplasia. Her clinical research investigates biomarkers and triage tools to identify cervical and anal dysplasia.

Dr. Flowers has provided leadership locally and nationally, specifically, as a Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) Co-Investigator with academic and clinical appointments at Emory University; she chairs the (WIHS) cancer and pathology working group. She provides leadership locally in the development of hypothesis-driven research to discover new biomarkers that improve our understanding of the natural history of lower-genital tract disease, including anal dysplasia, in women, especially those at high risk for HIV. Her expertise in this area is underscored by her directorship of the Colposcopy and Anoscopy clinic within the Grady Memorial and Emory University Hospital Systems and Emory Gynecologic Clinics where I clinically supervise medical students and residents in training and provide direct patient care for many low-income, at-risk Atlanta adolescent females and adult women.

She decided to enroll as a student in the executive program of Rollins School of Public Health because of an interest in developing educational tools to increase knowledge and change behavior towards cervical cancer screening and vaccine usage among populations at risk for HPV related disease. Dr. Flowers has published an adaptation to her program Con Amor Aprendemos for the African American population to increase knowledge in this population with the highest mortality from cervical cancer in the US.
